As we were all going on peacefully in our lives, a bushfire in Victoria ignited in extreme fire conditions. In total, 400 bushfires raged in Victoria - many areas completely burnt down. February the 7th, 2009, is known as Black Saturday. It is the worst bushfire to date in Australian history. This resulted in 143 deaths and 414 injuries.

In total, the loss from properties, livestock and businesses was a whopping $1.02 billion. The response from Australia was immediate. Thanks to the many donations from around the world, a total of $375 million was raised to help the victims of the bushfire.

Sam the Koala was an inspiration to everyone when David Tree, a firefighter, rescued this koala from the result of the Black Saturday bushfires.

This has lead to the world being more cautious about bushfires. The NSW Rural Fire Service have adoped additional methods to educate everyone on this issue.

Preparation is the key to survival. There are many bushfire survival plans around the website, which encourages setting up and memorising your fire survival plan.

Ways to prevent yourself from fire include:
  • The removal of flammable materal from your property
  • Mowing the lawn often
  • Removing leaves from gutters
  • Installing a smoke alarm
  • Knowing your fire escape plan
  • Fire extinguishers or blankets
